About the Chesapeake Bay

When you visit the Chesapeake Bay you can either have a packed, fun-filled vacation or enjoy total relaxation. Most places to see are a short drive from our Chesapeake Bay farm, or you can relax right on our waterfront property bird watching and enjoying the wildlife scenery. You can also take to the water - fishing or exploring Chesapeake Bay & its tributaries in your own boat. Arrangements can even be made to have a rental boat/ charter waiting for you when you arrive!

No matter what your interests, the Chesapeake Bay has something for you.

Some interesting Chesapeake Bay facts:

  • The bay is almost 200 miles long and 30 miles across at its widest point;
  • The Chesapeake Bay has 4400 miles of shoreline;
  • The bay contains 18 trillion gallons of water. It has an average depth of only 27 feet. Its deepest point is 153 feet;
  • Its name comes from the Native American word "Chesepiooc," meaning "Great Shellfish Bay";
  • 48 larger rivers and nearly 100 smaller rivers drain into the Bay;
  • More than 175,000 pleasure boats are registered on the Chesapeake Bay;

Chesapeake Bay Culture

The Chesapeake Bay community commonly housed distinguished cultural groups. There are many opportunities to enjoy choral, chamber and symphonic music, along with ballet, opera and theater. Annapolis offers Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts hosting top notch musical entertainment and Chesapeake Music Hall offers a year round selection of theatre productions. Nearby Baltimore and Washington offer the National Theater, Arena Stage, Kennedy Center, Ford's Theater, Center Stage and the Morris Mechanic Theater. The region also boasts some of the finest museums in the world including the Smithsonian. The National Aquarium in Baltimore offers the opportunity to see marine life up close. Unique treats during the summer months include free outdoor concerts and open-air theater productions. Special events include the Annapolis Arts Festival, the Renaissance Festival, and the Chesapeake Appreciation Days.

Not up for a day of sightseeing and culture? Then don’t forget you can always spend hours roaming the 700 acres of our pristine farmland where wildlife abounds and bald eagles fly free, or travel minutes away down a country road to the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge.
